May 1st, 2026 takes place in a context of a deep and ongoing aggravation of the global capitalist system’s crisis. This crisis confirms that capitalism, based on the exploitation of wage labour, competition between monopolies, and the relentless pursuit of profit, inevitably produces wars, poverty, and new forms of barbarism.
It is essential to recall that May 1st is not a simple day of celebration. It is, in its origins, a day of struggle and mobilisation of the working class, won through long battles and sacrifices. Contrary to what the bourgeoisie seeks to portray by turning it into an empty celebration devoid of any demands or revolutionary perspective, May 1st must remain a day of struggle. It is not an innocent holiday, but a moment for organisation, for demands, and for resistance against exploitation, in order to uphold the perspective of a radical transformation of society.
The contradictions of capitalism are today expressed with increasing intensity through imperialist conflicts. The war in Ukraine is an expression of the contradictions of the global capitalist system, where capitalist states and alliances confront each other for control over markets, energy resources, trade routes, and spheres of influence. This conflict does not represent a confrontation between different social systems, but rather rivalries between bourgeois classes and monopoly groups within the framework of the global imperialist system.
At the same time, imperialist interventions and aggressions continue worldwide: support by imperialist powers for the Zionist entity and the ongoing occupation and crimes against the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as in Lebanon; aggression against Venezuela; the criminal blockade against Cuba; and pressure and attacks against Iran. These policies represent various forms of imperialist intervention, stemming from the functioning of contemporary monopoly capitalism and the struggle for control over resources and markets.
In this context, militarisation is intensifying and war propaganda is expanding. The increase in military spending and threats involving the use of weapons of mass destruction illustrate the level of danger reached in the rivalries of the global imperialist system, where the interests of monopolies prevail over the survival of humanity.
No capitalist power nor any imperialist alliance can offer an alternative for the peoples. All of them represent different expressions of the same global system of exploitation.
This May 1st must be a day of international unity of the working class. Workers must affirm their refusal to be sacrificed for the profits of monopolies, their rejection of austerity policies, anti-social attacks, and imperialist wars. They must refuse to be dragged into conflicts where peoples are used as cannon fodder in the rivalries between capitalist powers.
In Algeria, this global reality is reflected in an ongoing offensive against the social and democratic rights of workers. The development of a firmly capitalist economic orientation, increased openness to foreign capital, and the weakening of strategic public sectors are accompanied by a strengthening of market mechanisms and social inequalities. At the same time, capitalist classes benefit from multiple fiscal and economic advantages: tax exemptions, customs facilitation, investment incentives, profit transfers, and various direct and indirect forms of state support. These measures reinforce capital accumulation in favour of a minority.
Simultaneously, trade union and democratic freedoms are increasingly threatened. Trade unions and workers’ activists face legal prosecutions, obstacles to their activities, and restrictions on the right to demonstrate. This offensive is accompanied by the adoption of laws that limit trade union freedom and restrict the independent organisation and activity of workers, in order to prevent any autonomous structuring of the working class and to contain its struggles.
This situation confirms the fundamentally antagonistic nature of capitalist society: on one side, the interests of capital; on the other, those of the working class and popular strata, faced with exploitation, precariousness, and inequality.
Under these conditions, Algerian workers are called upon to make May 1st a day of mobilisation, encounter, and strengthening of their class organisation. The solution can only come from the independent struggle of the working class, its organisation on class-based, democratic and internationalist foundations, and the construction of a party capable of advancing the perspective of overthrowing the power of capital.
It is necessary to strengthen the common struggle of workers and peoples against imperialism and neo-colonialism, which arise from the functioning of the global capitalist system. International solidarity can only be real if it is based on class independence and the rejection of alignment behind any imperialist power or alliance. It is expressed through the struggle against exploitation, wars, and interventions, as well as through support for peoples suffering from blockades, occupation, and interference.
The working class must not align itself with any camp, any capitalist power, or any imperialist alliance. All act within the framework of the same global capitalist system and defend the interests of their own bourgeoisies.
The future may be marked by widespread wars and devastating social catastrophes if the working class does not fulfil its historical mission. It must organise independently, on a class basis, reject any participation in imperialist wars, and take advantage of inter-imperialist contradictions without alignment or support for any camp, in order to strengthen the struggle for the overthrow of capitalism and open the path to socialism.
May 1st is a day of mobilisation and struggle.
